Do you no longer wear sleeveless clothes? Do your little tops remain at the back of your cupboard? Do you feel ashamed of your arms and hide them under sleeves? That is no longer necessary after an arm lift. Our skin slackens with weight loss and age and that holds true for the arms as well. You then sometimes end up with “bingo wings” and flappy skin on the upper arms. An arm life is a relatively simple procedure to lose those ungraceful wings forever!

Tight upper arms with an arm lift
Arm lift results
The result, depending on the degree of slackening, will be tight upper arms. This intervention however does not deliver a perfectly tight result. The stitches are placed, in as far as possible, in inconspicuous places but the scars do remain visible. The final result will be visible after 1 year. Seen the results may be less than you expected, you should give proper thought to the pros and cons. The surgeon will guide you through this.
Recovery after an arm lift
The skin will be swollen after the surgery and there will be bruising. It can be painful but painkillers will provide relief. The compression bandages need to be worn day and night for 3 to 7 days. If you stopped smoking before the surgery, keep it up for a few more weeks. Smoking increases the chance of skin breakdown. Restrict your physical activity in the first period but do keep moving to stimulate your blood flow. It is usually possible to return to work quite soon after an arm lift, but consult your surgeon first. The scars will be red for the first few months and will then gradually take on the same color as your skin. Keep the scars out of the sun in the first year. After a year moderate sun is fine but use sun cream. The sun will stimulate the scars to take on your skin color.
Safety through precautionary measures
Once you have decided on liposuction, we will provide you with a patient information document. Please read it carefully. The doctor will provide you, in addition to the general advice, with instructions that are specific to you based on your health and living conditions. The general advice is summarized below.
Before the surgery:
- Stop smoking four weeks before surgery and do not start again for at least 2 weeks afterwards. Smoking slows wound healing and increases the risk of infection.
- Should you be taking Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis, Asprocardio or similar medication, discuss with your surgeon whether you can temporarily stop using them. This also applies to Aspirin and painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac, etc. During the period around the surgery, you can use painkillers such as Paracetamol and Panadol.
- Do not take blood thinning medication before surgery.
- Do not forget to arrange your transport home. You can not drive yourself after the surgery and it is forbidden.
- Ensure you are not alone for the first few nights after the surgery and that someone is available to help you in your home for the first few days.
- Don’t forget to give us your measurements and details for the compression garment. We recommend that you buy two pieces of clothing, this is for your own comfort and hygiene.
The day of the surgery:
- Remove all jewelry, watches and piercings. The clinic is not liable for loss and / or theft.
- Do not eat or drink anything for the 8 hours before the surgery.
- Let your “driver” know at what time you can be picked up. The doctor will give you an estimate. You will remain in general at the hospital for a few hours after the surgery and in some cases it is advisable to stay the night.
After the surgery:
- After the procedure you will be given a piece of clothing that will ensure that the correct pressure is applied to your body so that swelling is reduced and your body remains in the correct shape. Wear your compression garment for as long as the doctor advises. This is on average six weeks.
- Liposuction is in most cases is a day treatment. Your helper can take you home a few hours after the surgery.
- Keep in mind that you will not be able to work in the first week after the surgery. If you have physically strenuous work, it may be longer before you can resume work. Always consult your doctor first.
- Keep moving! Movement helps to reduce swelling and stimulates blood circulation.
- Sports however are not recommended for the first 6 weeks after surgery.
Risks and complications
There are risks and complications with each surgery. The arm lift is a simple procedure however with reduced chance of complications.
Possible complications are:
- Allergic reaction to anesthesia, disinfectant
and plasters - Ungainly scar (scar correction is a possibility)
- Nerve damage
- Asymmetric arm recovery
- Risk of skin breakdown for smokers.
The personal consultation
Your first step towards tighter arms is a personal consultation with our plastic surgeon. This consultation is always free of obligation. You don’t have to decide right away, but you can if you so wish. The surgeon will listen to your wishes and expectations and then examine the possibilities with you. Each body is different, which is why it is important for the surgeon to see the area you wish to change in order to offer you the best advice. Keep this in mind and wear easy-fitting clothing. If you have pictures of the arms you wish to have, take them with you and show them to the surgeon who will then be able to assess, based on your wishes and the pictures, whether your expectations are realistic.
This personal consultation resulting in clear advice around your expectations is crucial before you make up your mind. The disadvantages of an arm lift are relatively high. You can then discuss with the surgeon whether the advantages will be worth it.
The surgeon will ask you about your current health, but also about your medical history. Share as much as you can as the details are important for your own safety and for achieving the best results. The surgeon will tell you in all honesty whether he or she thinks it is wise to perform the desired procedure and will walk you through it. Should an arm lift not be the best option, he, he will look at other possibilities with you. Take this opportunity to ask about other treatments or wishes you have. Our surgeons can give you the information you need on all our treatments.
Once you have decided which treatments or procedure you want, the surgeon or a care team member will give you the price of the treatment based on the doctor’s advice. It is often possible to make an appointment for the surgery immediately after the consultation.
If you decide to take the next step on your journey to tighter arms, you will receive a patient information document with all the important information.
Should you still have questions after the consultation, our care team will be happy to assist you. You can ring, mail or use WhatsApp. We would be delighted to guide you on your journey to more beautiful and tighter upper arms.
