Arm lift

Tight upper arms with an arm lift

Do you no longer wear sleeveless clothes? Do your little tops remain at the back of your cupboard? Do you feel ashamed of your arms and hide them under sleeves? That is no longer necessary after an arm lift. Our skin slackens with weight loss and age and that holds true for the arms as well. You then sometimes end up with "bingo wings" and flappy skin on the upper arms. An arm life is a relatively simple procedure to lose those ungraceful wings forever!

What happens during an arm lift?

The surgeon draws the lines he will follow to make the incisions during the operation. He then makes the incisions in the upper arms to remove the excess skin. This does mean that the operation is impossible without leaving a sizable scar. Thankfully our international doctors are specialized in minimizing scar tissue by not only suturing the upper skin, but also the layers beneath. After the incisions, the surgeon loosens the skin from the muscle and fat and removes the excess skin. Excess fat is also sucked away if necessary. the wound is then treated with tissue glue and sutured. The operation takes around 1 to 2 hours and is usually performed under total anesthesia. Most patients can go home a few hours after the operation.

Arm lift results

The result, depending on the degree of slackening, will be tight upper arms. This intervention however does not deliver a perfectly tight result. The stitches are placed, in as far as possible, in inconspicuous places but the scars do remain visible. The final result will be visible after 1 year. Seen the results may be less than you expected, you should give proper thought to the pros and cons. The surgeon will guide you through this.

Recovery after an arm lift

The skin will be swollen after the operation and there will be bruising. It can be painful but painkillers will provide relief. The compression bandages need to be worn day and night for 3 to 7 days. If you stopped smoking before the operation, keep it up for a few more weeks. Smoking increases the chance of skin breakdown. Restrict your physical activity in the first period but do keep moving to stimulate your blood flow. It is usually possible to return to work quite soon after an arm lift, but consult your surgeon first. The scars will be red for the first few months and will then gradually take on the same color as your skin. Keep the scars out of the sun in the first year. After a year moderate sun is fine but use sun cream. The sun will stimulate the scars to take on your skin color.

Safety through precautionary measures

You will receive, well before your operation, a document with patient information, detailing general national advice.
The surgeon will also give you personalized advice based on your general health status. Below is a short summary of the general advice. It is important to take it into account for the best result.

Before the surgery:

  • Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the operation. This is better for blood circulation and healing.
  • Discuss any medication you are taking with the doctor. Blood thinning medication should in general not be used for a few days before the operation. If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, it is crucial youo discuss this with the doctor.
  • If you take Aspirin or aspirin-containing painkillers (Advil, Diclofenac etc.), we advise you to stop taking them one week before the operation and to start again only three days after the operation. During this period you can use painkillers such as Paracetamol and Panadol.
  • Start taking Arnica drops two weeks before the procedure, this will ensure that the bruises and any swelling disappear more quickly.
  • Arrange your drive home in advance. It is forbidden for you to drive after the operation.
  • Arrange someone to help you at home in the first few days after the operation and we recommend someone is at home with you for the first few nights.

The day of the operation:

  • Do not wear jewelry, watches or piercings.
  • Make sure you don't eat or drink 6 hours before the operation.
  • Enjoy a long shower or bath as you will only be able to enjoy a carefree shower one week after the operation.
  • Give the person who is collecting you an approximate time. The doctor will help you estimate this.

After the surgery:

  • After the operation, you will be given prescriptions for medication such as painkillers in consultation with the surgeon.

Risks and complications

There are risks and complications with each operation. The arm lift is a simple procedure however with reduced chance of complications.

Possible complications are:

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia, disinfectant and plasters
    en pleisters

You don't have to decide right away, but you can if you so wish. The surgeon will listen to your wishes and expectations and then examine the possibilities with you. Each body is different, which is why it is important for the surgeon to see the area you wish to change in order to offer you the best advice. Keep this in mind and wear easy-fitting clothing. If you have pictures of the arms you wish to have, take them with you and show them to the surgeon who will then be able to assess, based on your wishes and the pictures, whether your expectations are realistic.

This personal consultation resulting in clear advice around your expectations is crucial before you make up your mind. The disadvantages of an arm lift are relatively high. You can then discuss with the surgeon whether the advantages will be worth it.

The surgeon will ask you about your current health, but also about your medical history. Share as much as you can as the details are important for your own safety and for achieving the best results. The surgeon will tell you in all honesty whether he or she thinks it is wise to perform the desired procedure and will walk you through it. Should an arm lift not be the best option, he, he will look at other possibilities with you. Take this opportunity to ask about other treatments or wishes you have. Our surgeons can give you the information you need on all our treatments.

Once you have decided which treatments or procedure you want, the surgeon or a care team member will give you the price of the treatment based on the doctor's advice. It is often possible to make an appointment for the operation immediately after the consultation.

If you decide to take the next step on your journey to tighter arms, you will receive a patient information document with all the important information.

Should you still have questions after the consultation, our care team will be happy to assist you. You can ring, mail or use WhatsApp. We would be delighted to guide you on your journey to more beautiful and tighter upper arms.
