What happens with breast augmentation

Breast augmentation takes place under general anaesthesia and takes an average of an hour and a half, depending on the placement method. There are different ways to insert the implants into the breast:

Through the inframammary fold

When the implant is inserted through the inframammary fold, the incisions are made on the underside of your breasts. This method has the advantage that the surgeon can place larger implants and has a good view of the chest cavity. The risk of afterblooding and other complications is relatively small with this procedure. And although the scar you will have left is quite large compared to other possibilities, it is well hidden in the inframammary fold. After a year, this scar is almost invisible.

Through the armpit

In this procedure, the incisions are made in the armpit. The great advantage of this method is that you will not leave any scars on or under the breast, but there is a greater chance that the implants may shift. Also, with this technique, the surgeon has a poorer view of the chest cavity.

Through the areola

With this method, the incisions are placed at the transition from the areola to the breast. The scar will be small and inconspicuous. This technique is particularly suitable for the insertion of smaller implants because only a narrow incision is made. This procedure is often combined with a small breast lift. However, with this method there is a risk of a sensory disorder in the nipple.

Placement of implants

The implants can be placed in front of the muscle, behind the muscle or partially in front of and behind the muscle. Which method the surgeon uses for your breast augmentation depends on the condition of your skin, the amount of skin tissue in your breast, the type of implant and the desired result.

Implants are usually placed above the pectoral muscle when:

  • Your breast contains enough tissue of its own to cover the implant.
  • Your pectoral muscles are very strong, strong pectoral muscles can cause displacement of the implants.
  • You wish for a big cup size.

The downside of placing implants above the pectoral muscle is that the breasts can hang sooner than other methods.

In most cases, the implants are partially placed above and below the pectoral muscle (dual plane). One of the advantages of this placement method is that there is less risk of capsule formation in the breast. In addition, the result often feels and looks more natural. The downside of this method is a longer recovery period and more pain during the first weeks after surgery.

The implants

At Essential Aesthetics we use only the best quality implants: Mentor, Natrelle and BRST line. the manufacturers of these brands all give a lifetime warranty on the implants. our clinic works with silicone implants because they give the best results. in addition to different brands and placement methods, you can also choose from different prosthetic shapes: round or drop formation. you can also choose from the consistency or cohesion of the silicone, for example liquid silicone gel implants and solid silicone implants. each option has its pros and cons, so it is important to be well informed about the different implants. of course, our specialists will help you with this and you will be able to see and feel all the implants during the consultation. we will be happy to help you choose the implants that best fit your body and stature.

Profile of the implant

The surface of an implant can be rough or smooth. Most anatomical implants have a rough surface. The round implants have both. If the surface is rough, there is less chance of capsule formation. The surgeon chooses which surface is best for you and tells you why.

The result of breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a reliable and safe procedure. After the procedure, the result is immediately visible. But keep in mind that your breasts will be wrapped in compressive bandages after the operation, so you won't be able to see your new breasts immediately. Also, your breasts will be swollen during the first period of the procedure. Your breasts will have recovered from the procedure after about 6 months, then the end result will be clearly visible. After a year, the scars will also be discoloured and will hardly be noticeable anymore.

Recovery after breast augmentation

Just like after any surgery, your body needs to recover from the operation. Our care team will make sure that the healing goes as smoothly as possible. After the breast augmentation, your breasts will be connected to a support bandage. You will wear this bandage for the first 48 hours. In addition, you will wear a special postoperative bra. This bra resembles a sports bra and gives your breasts the support they need. How long you need to wear this bra, you will consult your doctor. You may also need to wear a breast strap to lower the implants faster.

In the beginning, your breasts can feel painful. Most patients experience a pressing sensation on the chest. The pain is in most cases not serious and can be well controlled with medication. In a few cases, drains also need to be inserted to drain wound fluid.

For the first six weeks after surgery, we advise you not to lift your arms higher than the shoulders. It is also wise not to lift or exercise. After those 6 weeks, you can start moving normally again. However, make sure your breasts remain well supported. We advise you not to wear underwired bras in the first year.

Safety by precaution

Once you have decided to undergo breast augmentation, we will provide you with a patient information document, which, in addition to general advice, will provide you with advice that is specific to you and based on your health and living conditions.

Before the operation

  • Stop vDo not smoke for at least two weeks after the operation. Smoking slows down wound healing and increases the risk of infection.
  • Start taking Arnica drops two weeks before the operation. Use the drops until two weeks after the operation. This reduces the burden of bruising and swelling.
  • If you are taking Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis, Asprocardio or similar medications, you should discuss with your surgeon whether you can temporarily stop using these medications. This also applies when taking Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac, etc. During the period around the operation, you can use painkillers such as Paracetamol and Panadol.
  • Don't take blood thinning medication before surgery.
  • Don't forget to arrange your transport home. Driving yourself is not possible after the operation and forbidden.
  • Make sure that you are not alone for the first few nights after the operation. Also make sure that someone is available to help you in your home for the first few days.
  • Don't forget to give us your measurements and details for the postoperative bra. We recommend that you buy two bras, this is for your own comfort and hygiene.

The day of the operation:

  • Do not wear jewelry, watches or piercings. The clinic is not liable for loss and / or theft.
  • Make sure you don't eat or drink anything 8 hours before the operation.
  • Let your supervisor know at what time you can be picked up. The doctor can give you an estimate of the time. Usually you will stay in the hospital for a few hours after the operation and in some cases it is wise to spend the night in the hospital.

After surgery

  • Until you leave the clinic or hospital, you will be supervised by the nurse, the anaesthetist and the plastic surgeon.
  • In consultation with the surgeon, we give most patients a prescription for medication (pain relief).
  • The breasts will feel somewhat tense and swollen after the operation. The skin has to adapt to the new breast volume. The tension decreases by itself.
  • Sleep alone on your back for the first period. After two weeks you can sleep carefully on your side.
  • Rest well for the days after surgery.
  • Talk to your doctor, when you can shower again.
  • Don't lift your arms above your shoulders for the first two weeks. Don't lift heavy things.
  • Keep in mind that you will not be able to work in the first week after the operation. If you have physically strenuous work, it may take longer before you can get back to work. Always consult your doctor.
  • Sports are not recommended for the first 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Swimming or a sauna visit is also not recommended for the first 6 weeks.

Risks and complications

Every surgical procedure carries a risk of complications. Here are some of the risks and possible complications of breast augmentation:

  • Unsightly scarring
  • Internal or external haemorrhage (haematoma)
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Changes in (the feeling of) the nipple. This can be temporary or permanent.
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
  • Double bubble: this causes the implant to sag under the skin, creating a double breast.
  • Moisture build-up or capsule formation, which makes the breasts feel hard
  • Sore breasts

The counselling interview

The first step towards more beautiful buttocks is a consultation with our plastic surgeon. This conversation is, of course, entirely non-binding. The surgeon listens to your wishes and expectations and then looks at the various possibilities together with you. Because every body is different, it is important for the surgeon to be able to look at the area of the body that you are considering adjusting. A physical examination may therefore be necessary. Take this into account and put on comfortable clothing.

If you have photos or pictures of your dream breasts, please bring them to the conversation and show them to the surgeon, who will be able to give you specific advice and tell you if your expectations are realistic. If you already know what you want, it is easier to choose the right implants. You can choose from different sizes (from small to large), and shapes (round or anatomical). Together with the surgeon, you choose the implants that best suit your body and wishes.

The surgeon will also ask you about your health and medical history. Give as much accurate information as possible, this is important for your own safety. The surgeon will honestly tell you if he thinks it is wise to perform the desired procedure and will go through it with you. If it is not wise to opt for breast augmentation with implants, he will look for other solutions with you. Also take the opportunity to ask about other treatments or wishes you have. Our surgeons can always give you more information about other treatments.

Feel free to do some aftercare and read in advance, for example via the internet. You can even find online videos of this procedure. Also take a look at our patients' reviews.

Once you have decided which treatments you would like to receive, our care team will give you a quote for the treatment. It is usually possible to make an appointment for the operation immediately after the consultation, or ask the surgeon to immediately record the details of the chosen implant. If you decide to take the next step in your journey to a more beautiful appearance, you will receive all the important information.

Of course you don't have to decide right away if you want to receive treatment. Think about it calmly and well. When you're ready, our experts will be happy to help you!

If, after the consultation, you still have questions about breast augmentation, silicone breast implants, a breast lift or other treatments, our care team at Essential Aesthetics will be happy to answer them. Feel free to call, email or app us and we'll be happy to guide you on your journey to nicer, fuller or rounder breasts.

Of course, it is also possible to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift or a nipple correction.

"Excellent" 5

Good guidance, many possibilities and honest advice. I chose Essential Aesthetics because they work there with experienced doctors who perform this procedure regularly. I chose the largest size of implants, but even with this size you don't see the implant. It has remained a beautiful natural shape.

The aftercare has been super arranged, could always go through Whatsapp. What I found very pleasant is that the team and the doctor worked closely together and had contact about me. I was assisted and well advised during my recovery.

"Dream breasts thanks to Essential Aesthetics" 5

Since I was a teenager I dreamt of big breasts and felt very insecure about mine. In a bikini I didn't feel feminine at all. Now that I am in my 30s and already have a baby, I still made my dream come true.

Doctor Luca reassured me during the consultation and told me a lot about the dual plane technique and interesting facts (such as the fact that more than 2 million women have breast augmentation every year). His explanation about the implants and the examination of them was also very reassuring.
In the end I opted for implants with the dual plane technique with very small incisions and you don't see any scar now. Also I don't have those obvious "silicone breasts". I'm so incredibly satisfied!
This clinic is definitely recommended. Everyone was always there for me from start to finish, I could always go to them.
