Breast reduction

About breast reduction

Back problems, being uncomfortable with your breasts, or simply breasts that don't fit your physique. Whatever your reason for shrinking your breasts, Essential Aesthetics will be happy to help you realize your wish. Breast reduction can be the solution when you want smaller or firmer breasts. To shrink your breasts, different methods can be used, even shrinking by removing fat (liposuction) [add link] can be one method. Our surgeon will discuss the possibilities with you during a no-obligation consultation, so that the best result is achieved with as few scars as possible.

What happens during breast reduction surgery

This procedure takes place under general anaesthesia and lasts on average 2 hours. The surgeon makes an incision under the breasts and removes glandular and fatty tissue and skin. If necessary, the nipples are repositioned so that they fit the new shape of the breast. Usually two scars appear; in the fold under the breast and from the areola downwards (anchor scars).

The result

After the procedure, your smaller breasts are wrapped in compressive bandages, so you won't immediately see what your breasts look like. The first period, however, the breasts are still swollen. After six months, the result is visible and the scars have taken on the colour of your skin.

Recovery after breast augmentation

After the breast reduction, the breasts are firmly connected in a supportive bandage. The bandage can be removed after 48 hours. Immediately after the operation you will wear a special postoperative bra. This bra looks like a sports bra and gives your breasts the support they need. Wear this bra for as long as necessary. You may have to wear a chest strap to lower the implants faster. Most patients experience a pressing sensation on the chest. The pain is not too bad and can be easily controlled with pain medication. Sometimes drains are inserted to drain wound fluid. For the first six weeks after surgery, lifting your arms higher than your shoulders is not recommended. Lifting and exercising are also not recommended. After those 6 weeks, you can slowly start moving normally. However, make sure that your breasts remain well supported.

Safety by precaution

Well before your operation takes place, you will receive a document with patient information, in which the general national advice is described in detail.
Depending on your health, the surgeon will give you specific advice. Below is a brief summary of the general advice. The best result is achieved by taking this into account.

Before the surgery:

  • Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the operation. This is better for the blood circulation of your skin and it heals better.
  • Consult with the doctor about the medication you are taking. Blood thinning medication should probably not be used a few days before the operation. Especially when using medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consultation about its use is important.
  • If you use Aspirin or aspirin-containing painkillers (Advil, Diclofenac etc.), we advise you to stop using aspirin-containing painkillers one week before the operation and to start again three days after the operation. During this period you can use painkillers such as Paracetamol and Panadol.
  • Start taking Arnica drops two weeks before the procedure, this will ensure that the bruises and any swelling disappear more quickly.
Arrange transport to and from home before the operation. Driving after the operation is not possible for about two weeks.
  • Arrange help in the house for the first period. Especially the first nights we advise you not to be alone.
  • Don't forget to check if you have given the clinic all the information we need to order the special bra you will have to wear after the operation. We advise you to order two bras.

The day of the operation:

  • Do not wear jewelry, watches or piercings.
  • Make sure you don't eat or drink 6 hours before the operation.
  • Take a shower or bath, after the operation you may only shower again after two to three days.
  • Tell the person who picks you up when you can be picked up approximately. The doctor will be able to estimate this best.

After the surgery:

  • After the operation, in consultation with the surgeon, you will be given prescriptions for medication such as painkillers.
  • Your breasts are probably tense and swollen after surgery due to the enlargement. This takes just as long until the skin has adapted to your new breast size.
  • Rest well for a few days after the operation.
  • Sleep alone on your back for the first period. After two weeks you can sleep carefully on your side.
  • Talk to the doctor when you can shower.
  • Don't lift your arms above your shoulders for the first two weeks. Don't lift heavy things.
  • On average you can't work for a week, with physically strenuous work this can be longer. Ask the doctor for his estimate.
  • Sports are not recommended for the first 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Swimming or sauna visits are also not recommended for the first 6 weeks.

Risks and complications

Like all surgeries, breast reduction involves risks and there is a risk of complications. The risks include:

  • Unsightly scarring
  • Bleeding (haematoma)
