Ear correction

Oversized ears or ears that stick out
can be corrected quite easily.

We are not always happy with the ears we are born with. Oversized ears or ears that stick out prominently can be corrected quite easily. Are you unhappy with your ears? Do you find your ears stick out too much? Do you want smaller ears or earlobes? Then now is the time to take the step towards doing something about it. We are happy to guide you so that you can look in that mirror with a big smile on your face.

What happens during the surgery

During an ear pinning surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision at the back of the ear. The ear skeleton consists of cartilage. The plastic surgeon shapes this cartilage and fixes it with sutures on the inside of the ear. The ear is brought closer to the head and any excess skin is removed. There is a small scar at the incision on the back of the ear which is almost invisible.

Correction of oversized ears or earlobes

Plastic surgery can also help if one or both of your ears are particularly large.
Should the earlobe be too large, a piece can be removed with a small incision. Correcting protruding earlobes, torn earlobes or other abnormalities is also possible. The surgeon always makes the incisions in the most inconspicuous places.
The procedure on the earlobe can be performed under local anesthesia. Anesthetic fluid is then injected into the earlobe(s) to be treated.

Result

It is certainly possible to have prettier ears and our doctors will be delighted to help you. It is important to talk to a doctor about the possibilities and a lot is possible. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to make ears perfectly symmetrical. Their position however can be considerably improved. Sometimes the cartilage recoils, making a second surgery necessary.
The result after an earlobe correction is different per skin type, but with time, the scars are in general barely visible. After a recovery period of a few months, the earlobes are strong enough for new holes for earrings, for example.

Recovery after ear and earlobe corrections

After the ear surgery, the doctor or nurse will place a strong and tight bandage around the ears and head. The bandage will remain in place for a week until the sutures are removed. This means that it is not possible to wash your hair until the stitches have been removed. After that week, however, the ears still need to be protected by wearing a hair bandeau or bandage. This is particularly necessary at night as the ears can then be pressed against the pillow. You can wash your hair once the stitches are out. It is important that you keep the skin behind the ears clean and dry.
The ears can be red, swollen and painful for weeks. This lessens gradually. You can take paracetamol for the pain. An earlobe correction is a fairly minor surgery and you can go home immediately after the surgery. Adhesive plaster protects the wounds after an earlobe correction and you do not have to wear an extra bandage. These plasters will be removed by a doctor after about a week.

Safety through precautionary measures

Our care team will not only help you in advance with your preparations and during your intake interview with the surgeon, but will also guide you after the surgery, so that you know what to expect and heal as well and as quickly as possible.

The best result is obtained by taking into account the following general advice applicable to the interventions:

Before the surgery

  • Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery
  • Start taking Arnica drops two weeks in advance to reduce bruising and swelling.
  • If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consult your surgeon, the same applies to Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac and others.
  • Do not use blood thinning medication before surgery.
  • Don’t forget to arrange transportation home. Driving yourself after the surgery is not recommended.

The day of the surgery

  • Take a shower, after some surgeries you may not shower for 24 hours
  • Do not use make-up or facial cream
  • Do not wear jewellery or watches

After surgery

  • The doctor will tell you if you need to cool because of swelling. Follow this advice carefully.
  • Rest preferably lying on your back so the swelling goes down faster.
  • Keep the blood circulation active by taking walking about every hour. This promotes the healing of the wound.
  • Shower may only be done in consultation with the surgeon.
  • Working is allowed on average after a few days to a week. Ask the surgeon for advice.
  • Exercising is allowed six weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid direct sunshine on your wounds for the first months. So no sun or sunbed. Don’t forget to cover them properly when you’re planning on enjoying the sun with the rest of your body.

Risks and complications

An ear correction has the same risks as many other surgeries. Cartilage sometimes bends back to its original shape. Therefore there is no full guarantee that the ears will remain straight or symmetrical.

The following complications, though rare, may occur:

  • Bleeding from the wound.
  • Allergic reaction as a result of, for example, the anaesthetics used.
  • Change of scar tissue.
