Eyelid Correction

What is Eyelid Correction?

Kliniken Image

An Eyelid Correction is a relatively minor procedure that can be performed under local anesthetic. The result of an eyelid correction lasts around ten years. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be corrected. A tired look, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes: an eyelid correction will freshen your look. Genetic predisposition, lack of sleep, or aging; are all possible causes for sagging skin around your eyes.

Eyelid correction treatment details

  • The plastic surgeon removes excess skin and sometimes excess subcutaneous fat tissue by making an incision in the skin fold of the upper eyelid. The scar that remains after surgery is almost invisible.

Sometimes an upper eyelid correction is combined with a lower eyelid correction.

  • A lower eyelid correction can make a world of difference:

    1. You will look much more rested by removing excess skin or a fat pocket (puff). This is done by making an incision just below the lower lash line.

    2. The excess skin is cut away, and the fat bag is removed, creating a rested, younger look.

    3. The wound is sutured below the lower lash line, making the scar invisible.

  • Sometimes an eyelid correction alone is not enough. Our surgeon will advise you on the various possibilities. An example can tighten the lower eyelid (canthopexy).

All three eyelid corrections mentioned above give an excellent natural result with almost invisible scars.

Please make an appointment for a consultation with our surgeon so that he can tell you which surgery best suits your needs.

Our step by step process

A process to self expression

  • Our Care Team will welcome you by phone and ask the necessary questions to schedule a suitable appointment. We will also ask about your current health, surgical time frame, and previous surgeries to help us prepare for your arrival. Again, we would be delighted to welcome you to our clinic!

  • Your first visit to us is a so-called pre-consultation. It will occur with our specialist, who will guide you as best as possible through this unique journey. First, a specialist is there to listen to your needs and concerns. Then, our specialist will share her expertise and knowledge while trying to match your wishes with the available range of services and treatments.

Secondly, we will show you different options based on the information provided, and together will discuss each care package.

The third step is choosing from our experienced physicians who would suit your treatment. Our specialist will show you the surgeon’s broad portfolio and give you a free copy of our Patient Information Guide to the surgery to reread at home.

The fourth and last step will be with the surgeon selected by our expert. We understand that one visit is not enough when deciding on your body and safety, which is why we encourage a second visit.

By now, we have also received and processed all data for a pre-operative screening.

During this consultation, the treatment’s technical aspects and possible risks are discussed, and you are prepared for the big day!

  • Arriving at this step of your journey, you have already met our medical team and received all the necessary information. All preparations have been made, and it is finally time for the treatment. We understand that this is a milestone for many. Therefore we do our utmost to make it as comfortable as possible. Our team will share your excitement with you right up to the surgery.

  • There are three to four check-ups depending on your healing:

The first check-up is three or four days after the surgery to determine whether the plasters can be removed. The second check-up is after one week at the plastic surgeon’s when the stitches are removed.

The third and final check-up is after about six weeks. The surgeon checks whether the wounds have healed properly and whether the eyelid correction has been successful. If a fourth check-up is necessary, it will occur three months after the surgery at the plastic surgeon’s. Our care team will help you with your preparations during your consultation with the surgeon and guide you after the surgery so that you know what to expect and heal as quickly as possible. You will receive a document with patient information before the surgery containing national advice. In addition, the surgeon and the care team will give you advice that is specific to you.

    After the surgery

    • Make sure there is someone with you at home.
    • Remember to keep the area cool with a cold compress for 24 hours (tip: freeze some bags of peas, which you can use to cool). The swelling will be completely gone after 12 weeks.

    • You can return to work after a week, but only if it requires moderate to light physical exertion.
    • After a week, you can move normally again and walk and cycle carefully.
    • After two weeks you can wear eye make-up again.
    • Do not push, lift, or bend during the first three weeks after the eyelid correction.
    • Contact lenses can be worn again after about three weeks.
    • Sports is allowed six weeks after surgery.
    • Do not drive in the first period (car, motorcycle, etc.).

    FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Eyelid Correction

    • Eyelid correction, or blepharoplasty, may be considered in several situations. If you have noticeable sagging or drooping of the upper eyelids that obstruct your vision, an eyelid correction procedure can help improve your sight and enhance your appearance. Lower eyelid bags or puffiness that makes you look tired or older than your actual age can also be addressed through eyelid correction. Additionally, if you have excess skin and wrinkles around the eyelids, an eyelid correction can help rejuvenate your look and restore a youthful appearance. It is essential to consult with a qualified surgeon specializing in eyelid correction to determine if you are a suitable candidate and discuss the potential benefits and risks associated with the procedure.

    • Ideal candidates for eyelid correction are healthy individuals with excess skin or fat on the eyelids that create a tired, droopy appearance or sagging skin that obstructs their vision. This procedure may also be performed for medical reasons, such as improving vision or relieving symptoms like ptosis.

    • Most patients barely feel any pain after the eyelid correction. Some patients, however, suffer from a burning feeling. You can take 1000 mg of paracetamol four times a day. The plasters reduce the stretching sensation around the eyes and may remain in place.

The skin around the eyes feels a bit tight after the treatment. Light swelling and bruises are normal. You may have irritated eyes and blurred vision for several weeks. This is not something you have to worry about. It’s a natural body reaction.

    • Eyelid correction is typically an outpatient procedure that takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the extent of the correction needed.

    • If you have had an eyelid correction under local anesthetic, you will have a check-up and be able to go home as soon as 30 minutes later.

After an eyelid correction under general anesthesia, you must wait three to four hours before going home. Therefore, we advise you, once home, to eat easily digestible food such as water, tea, and rusk.

Remember to cool the eyes properly. This reduces swelling and bruising. The recovery period is of around two to three weeks. It will take 12 weeks for the swelling to disappear completely, the scars to have healed, and the result to be visible. This period varies from person to person. Please read our post-surgery advice carefully.

    • There are risks associated with every surgery, and your plastic surgeon will walk you through them. However, it is essential for your well-being and health not to withhold medical information and to follow the plastic surgeon’s advice. If you have any physical complaints, don’t hesitate and call the care team to see if an extra check-up by the surgeon is necessary.

    • Patients can typically expect a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance of the eyelids after eyelid correction. The procedure results are usually long-lasting but may be affected by factors like aging and sun exposure.
