At Essential Aesthetics in The Hague we offer eyelid correction (blepharoplasty), upper eyelid correction and lower eyelid correction. A tired look, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes: an eyelid correction will freshen your look. Genetic predisposition, lack of sleep or aging; are all possible causes for sagging skin around your eyes. A Blepharoplasty is a relatively minor procedure that can be performed under local anesthetic. The result of an eyelid correction lasts around ten years. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be corrected. Our doctors specialize in scarring minimization, which means that all others will see after the healing period is your fresh and rested look.
An eyelid correction will enable you to freshen your look.

Our personal attention and warm approach makes you feel at home. Even after the procedure, our medical team will offer you the necessary care.
Upper eyelid correction
The plastic surgeon removes excess skin and sometimes excess subcutaneous fat tissue by making an incision in the skin fold of the upper eyelid, the scar that remains after surgery is almost invisible.
Sometimes an upper eyelid correction is combined with a lower eyelid correction.
Lower eyelid correction and removal of bags under the eyes
A lower eyelid correction can make a world of difference. By removing excess skin or a fat pocket (puff), you will look much more rested. This is done by making an incision just below the lower lash line. The excess skin is cut away, then the fat pocket is removed, creating a rested, younger look. The wound is sutured just below the lower lash line, making the scar almost invisible.
Lower eyelid correction with lateral eyelid tightening
Sometimes an eyelid correction alone is not enough. Our surgeon will advise you on the various possibilities. It is possible for example to tighten the lower eyelid (canthopexy).
All three eyelid corrections mentioned above give a nice natural result, with almost invisible scars. Make an appointment for a consultation with our surgeon so that he can tell you which surgery best suits your needs.
Eyelid correction recovery
If you have had an eyelid correction under local anesthetic, you will then have a check-up and will be able to go home as soon as 30 minutes later.
After an eyelid correction under general anesthesia you will have to wait three to four hours before going home. We advise you once home to eat easily digestible food such as water, tea and rusk.
Don’t forget to cool the eyes properly. This reduces the swelling and bruising. The recovery period is of around two to three weeks. It will take 12 weeks for the swelling to completely disappear, for the scars to have healed and the end result to be clearly visible. This period varies from person to person. Please read our post-surgery advice carefully.
Most patients barely feel any pain after the eyelid correction. Some patients however suffer from a burning feeling. You can take 1000 mg paracetamol four times a day. The plasters reduce the stretching feeling around the eyes and may remain in place.
The skin around the eyes feels a bit tight after the treatment. Light swelling and bruises are normal. You may have irritated eyes and blurred vision for several weeks. This is not something you have to worry about, but a natural reaction of the body.
There are three to four check-ups depending on your healing:
The first check-up is three or four days after the surgery, to determine whether the plasters can be removed. The second check-up is after one week at the plastic surgeon’s. This is where the stitches are removed. The third and final check-up is after about six weeks. The surgeon checks whether the wounds have healed properly and whether the eyelid correction has been successful. If a fourth check-up is necessary, it will take place three months after the surgery at the plastic surgeon’s. Our care team will not only help you with your preparations and during your consultation with the surgeon, but will also guide you after the surgery, so that you know what to expect and heal as well and as quickly as possible. You will receive a document with patient information well before the surgery, containing the national advice. The surgeon and the care team will give you advice that is specific to you.
The best result is obtained by taking the following advice into account:
Before the surgery:
- Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery
- Start taking Arnica drops two weeks in advance to reduce bruising and swelling.
- If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consult your surgeon, the same applies to Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac and others.

- Preferably rest on your back, the swelling will go down faster.
- Keep the blood circulation active by walking around every hour. This promotes wound healing.
