Facelift

What happens during a facelift?

During a facelift, the surgeon makes an incision along the hairline and then reattaches it around and behind your ear. The surgeon then has access to the muscles and tissues under the skin. If you want to have the nose and lip fold lifted, the incision continues for a few centimeters above the ear. For a jaw and neck area lift, the incision continues for a few more centimeters behind the ear. The surgeon carefully loosens the skin from the connecting and muscle tissue of the face. The area that is separated is about the same size as the cheek. The plastic surgeon then uses special sutures to tighten the connecting and muscle tissue. The sutures are then carefully tightened. During the procedure, the surgeon pulls the skin tight and cuts away the excess skin. The skin is then reattached as inconspicuously as possible. In some cases, the surgeon may decide to place a drain to drain wound fluid. You can often go home 2 to 6 hours after the operation.

The S-lift or mini facelift

The S-lift is also called a mini-facelift. It is a less invasive operation with small, almost invisible scars. With this facelift you can lift the jawline in a subtle way. The degree of change in the neckline will depend on the condition of your skin. This operation can be performed under local anesthetic.

The effect of the treatment is visible for an average of 3 years. As with all facial healthy-aging procedures, we recommend that you supplement your skin care routine with skin boosters and filler treatments. These treatments stimulate the skin and provide improved skin structure, more elasticity and hydration of the skin's surface.

The MACS-Lift

This mini facelift is more extensive than the S-lift, but still less invasive than a full Facelift. This results in a shorter recovery period and smaller scars. Our surgeon uses the SMAS method for this lift. This method reduces the tension on the skin and results in smaller scars.
The advantages of a MACS lift:

  • It is an innovative technique that can only be performed by experienced plastic surgeons.
  • Can make you look up to 10 years younger
  • The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia
  • The treatment lasts approximately 4 hours
  • Short recovery period (1-2 weeks)
  • After the procedure you can resume a relaxed lifestyle
  • If the bandage does not disturb you, you can work again 2-3 days later
  • Virtually invisible scars thanks to the SMAS lift technique

The result of a Facelift

The optimal result of a Facelift is visible after about a year, depending on the chosen procedure. The scars are then completely faded and the skin and underlying muscle and connective tissue are then completely healed. How long the end result lasts depends on the chosen lift. The result can remain beautiful between 3 years (S-lift) to 10 years (full Facelift). Of course, this is also influenced by the extent to which you take care of your skin and face.

As with all facial anti-ageing procedures, we recommend that you supplement your skin care routine with skin boosters and filler treatments, which stimulate the skin and improve skin structure, elasticity and hydration of the skin's surface.

Recovering from a facelift

After the operation you will have a tight band around your head to support the skin, which can only be removed after 3 weeks. After a facelift you will suffer from swelling for about 2 to 3 weeks. The recovery period after an S-lift is shorter than the recovery period of a MACS-lift or an extended Facelift. Of course everyone heals at a different pace.

You can walk around again one or two days after the operation, but keep in mind that you need to take it easy for the first week. The surgeon will remove the bandage around the face after a few days. In the first months after the operation you will see small changes in the face every week. The end result will be visible after about 4 to 6 months. The scars will then be barely visible and the wrinkles and lines on the face and neck will be nicely smoothed.

Of course, the way you take care of your skin contributes to a better and longer lasting result, so our advice is to supplement your skin care routine with skin boosters and filler treatments that improve and optimize structure, elasticity, hydration and skin tone. Ask your doctor or our care team about the possibilities.

Safety through precautionary measures

A Facelift involves the same risks as many other operations. In order for your recovery to proceed as quickly as possible, there are a number of things to bear in mind:

  • You must wear a facial band for three weeks to prevent any subsequent bleeding and to guarantee the best result.
  • Keep the wounds dry until your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • You will be given preventive antibiotics. If you are allergic to certain antibiotics, please let us know in advance.

Risks and complications of a facelift

As with many other operations, there are risks with aa facelift. Though very rare, possible complications include:

  • Bleeding (haematoma).  There is sometimes bleeding after surgery from the tissue around the wound. Should this happens, your face may feel swollen and painful. It may be necessary to drain it by performing an additional procedure and this will require you to go back to the hospital or clinic.
  • Infection. It is important to recognize that a surgical incision implies the risk of infection through the bacteria from the patient's own skin. This potential infection can be accompanied by fatigue, weakness, fever and muscle pain. Antibiotics during your surgery will reduce this risk to a minimum. It is rare that a patient has to be be re-hospitalised. If you experience any symptoms of infection, contact your medical advisor or ring the outside office hours number is necessary.
  • Wound healing. How the wound heals varies from one person to the other and even from one body part to the other and is a gradual process. Smoking in the period before and after the operation can seriously impede the healing process.
  • Location and variability of scar  All surgeries leave a permanent scar and patients should be aware that the speed at which their scars heal and fade is completely variable and individual. Sometimes a scar does not heal in the normal way, this is known as hypertrophic scarring. Scars can be red or strongly coloured, thick, painful and it can take several years for them to heal. Although this is an unusual problem, it cannot be avoided or diagnosed in advance.

"Super customer friendly" 5

After my 45th birthday I noticed the hormonal changes in my face. It took me a while to face it, because I, like all other women, wished to stay as young as possible. After 3 years of doubting, I decided on a facelift.

I searched online for clinics and ended up at the largest clinic in the Netherlands. Unfortunately it wasn't done carefully, so after a year I was back to square one. Two years later I wanted to try again, but at Essential Aesthetics. I was very scared it would be another bad experience, but the personal help and advice was so good that I dared go for it anyway. I felt safe, something I didn't immediately feel at the other clinic.
During the consultation, Dr. Piombino took the time to listen to my worries and situation. He proposed a personal treatment plan: vitamin boosts to tighten my face and ultherapy to stimulate collagen. It was only after this that I went under the knife again for a facelift, neck lift and eyelid correction.
I received an amazing amount of information about the preparation and aftercare. Before each treatment the team called me to see if I had understood everything correctly and was ready for it. It was nice to get this personal support, I was immediately looking forward to the result!
After each operation they checked up on my healing. It wasn't always easy, but I trusted that I would be happy with the end result. Now, when I look in the mirror, I have a smile on my face. Thanks to the team of Essential Aesthetics I have regained my self-confidence.

"So happy" 5

For a number of years I had been fighting insecurity and considered a facelift, as I no longer felt happy with my own face and charisma. Because I found the decision so scary, I visited several clinics and talked to many doctors. But when I arrived at Essential Aesthetics I immediately felt at ease.

I experienced such warmth and welcome as soon as I arrived. A lovely cup of coffee and the friendly lady who came to have a nice reassuring chat, as she already knew what I was coming to get information for. The beautiful atmosphere and serenity I felt there actually made me feel very relaxed. Once I met the specialist Luca Piombino, an Italian top of the range doctor who comes over for a week once a month to carry out his extraordinarily talented treatments, I was immediately convinced. He explained so comprehensively and clearly what would await me on that particular day and how I would feel afterwards. I immediately planned an appointment and a month later I lay there on the operating table, trembling but still full of confidence and the knowledge that I was in good hands. I now feel so confident at the age of 52, and receive daily compliments from my loved ones that this was done so beautifully, naturally and skillfully, and walk around with a huge smile on my face. I am so thankful to the entire team at Essential Aesthetics who have made me shine again and in particular to Dr Poimbino and Dr Jansen. I am a profoundly happy and grateful woman.

"Highly recommend this clinic" 5

As an expat in The Hague, I found it difficult to put myself in the hands of a clinic.
After al lot of research, I found Essential Aesthetics. Immediately when I arrived, I felt the warm feeling of the team and the attention for details. The care team specialist took time to explain all the steps during the consultation. What I very much liked is that I they explained how they work and the story and drive behind the company and why and how they help their patients.

Doctor Luca Piombino, took his time to explain me a lot of aspects related to a facelift surgery and made me aware of what I can expect. I could have seen why he had so many good reviews. I was impressed when I heard that he is coming from a family of plastic surgeon and that initially he worked for several.
years as a maxillofacial surgeon helping kids with malformations to have a better life.
I found it unique as well that at this clinic, the doctor is working in a team with another surgeon. It sounds convenient to have 2 specialists for myself when it comes to such a delicate surgery as a facelift. It took me 2 weeks to recover, period in which, the team was very often in contact with me, showing me
The result is absolutely great, and I love to see my fresh look now, a few months after the surgery. I feel like I am glowing again.
What I also wish to share in this review is that the clinic has a whole package integrated in maintaining the result after the surgery with a non-invasive treatment I am going to follow: a HIFU technique based on ultrasound therapy.
