A personal choice, to optimize your femininity

Essential Aesthetics is selective in its choice of specialists.
One of the qualities we look for is ‘a heart for people’.

Some women experience physical complaints when their inner labia are too large in relation to the outer labia. There are various causes for this. It may be genetic or due to the way the inner labia developed during puberty. The labia may also be permanently affected by childbirth, menopause or weight loss. This can lead to prolonged irritation of the labia, or inflammation of the area around the vagina and to discomfort during sports, cycling, horse riding and sexual intercourse among other things. Tight clothing and certain fabrics also cause skin irritation. Some women find their outer labia ungainly or physically suffer from them. It is also possible that your outer labia (majora) is just too thin, too small and you wish for fuller labia. This can happen when you get older for example or lose weight. A cosmetic treatment can then be the solution. The filling of your labia can be done with body fat or a filler.

What happens during a labia correction?

The specialist marks the skin to be removed before the procedure. Considering that we are talking about skin reduction for both labia majora and labia minora, the correction is a fairly simple intervention. It is carried out under local anesthetic. The surgeon will give you a number of numbing injections in and around the labia. The surgical area will be disinfected and protected with sterile cloths. The excess skin will then be removed from the labia minora. The incision is then sutured with soluble sutures. The procedure takes an average of 1 hour. You can barely see the cut after the surgery. You will be given a pair of netted underwear with a sanitary towel to absorb possible wound fluid and a wet dressing to cool the area down.

You will only see the result clearly once the swelling has subsided. Considering that most women are not 100% symmetrical to start with, a complete symmetry can not be guaranteed. But, as said before, the results are generally very satisfactory. Most women are extremely satisfied with the final result. The scars will have practically disappeared after six months to a year.

We recommend, in order to prevent swelling, that the treated area be cooled with an ice pack during the first 2 to 3 days. Do this for 15 minutes every hour. It also makes sense to sit on a rolled up towel for as much as possible in those days. It serves as a pressure bandage. It is also important to keep the wound clean. It needs to be rinsed several times a day with, for example, the soft jet of the shower head. After dabbing the wound dry, you can apply some Vaseline or other greasy cream. The pain is usually only slight, but in need you can take paracetamol. Our advice is to take a week’s rest and to refrain from exercising, cycling or sexual intercourse for the first 6 weeks. Nor is it advisable to do heavy physical labor or heavy lifting. The aim is to keep the pressure on the wound to a minimum. The wound is not bandaged after the labiaplasty. We do advise you to use sanitary towels for any potential blood loss. The scars will become less and less visible over time.

Safety through precautionary measures

Once you have decided to undergo a labiaplasty, you will receive a patient information document. Please read this carefully. The doctor will provide you with general advice but also advice specific to you, based on your health and living conditions. Below you will find a summary of some general advice. Before the intervention: Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery and keep it up for at least two weeks after surgery. Smoking slows down wound healing and increases the risk of infection. Please inform the plastic surgeon and the anaesthetist of any allergies prior to the procedure. Do not take blood-thinning medication before the surgery. Discuss when you can start again, which is usually one day after the surgery. Should you be taking Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis, Asprocardio or similar medication you need to discuss with your surgeon whether you can temporarily stop. This also applies to aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac, etc. You can use painkillers such as Paracetamol and Panadol in the period around the surgery.

The day of the surgery:

  • Remove all jewellery, watches and piercings. The clinic is not liable for any loss/theft.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for the 8 hours before the surgery.
  • Let your “driver” know at what time you can be picked up. The doctor will give you an estimate. You will remain in general at the hospital for a few hours after the surgery and in some cases, it is advisable to stay the night.
  • Do not apply cream or body lotion to your labia.

After the surgery:

  • No sports, heavy physical labour or sexual intercourse for 6 weeks after the surgery. There should be as little pressure as possible on the wound.
  • Use a sanitary pad for potential blood loss.

Risks and complications

There is a small risk of complications such as wound infection or bleeding after every intervention. Should you experience recurring pain, swelling, heated skin, fever and/or redness contact our clinic, better safe than sorry. Further potential complications are numbness, a tightness around the scar and wound infections. It can, though rarely, be necessary to make small corrections in order to get the best result. Smoking affects the wound healing and heightens the chances of complications.

Pubic area bleaching.
Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation around the intimate zone? Our peeling is the solution! Bleaching your pubic area is good if the skin between your legs is darker than the rest of your skin. This often occurs as a result of shaving and waxing or is genetic.

The treatment consists in two peeling sessions in combination with using the Lightening Cream at home to support the result. Each treatment lasts 20-30 minutes. The treatment is virtually painless, but you may experience a tingling sensation. After the treatment, the skin feels dry and tight. The effect s immediately visible. The second peeling takes place two weeks later. We advise you to avoid sexual contact for at least 2 to 3 days after the treatment. Use a sanitary towel to absorb potential moisture.
