Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Many men and women wish for a tighter or flatter stomach because indeed the belly is a problem zone. We start off in life with a flatter belly, but the older we get, the more effort it takes to keep it flat. Wearing a bikini starts to be an issue. Skin ageing, weight loss, but also pregnancies can cause the stomach skin to start hanging, no matter how many ab exercises you do. Sometimes unfortunately surgery is the only way to get rid of that flabby belly. A tummy tuck can be the solution to remove the loose skin. Never want to have to hide your stomach again? That is possible, with the right surgery and our surgeon can help you. One of the domains of expertise of our international expert, is suturing. It is customary to only suture the upper skin layer. Our surgeon however attaches value to a beautiful scar that is as inconspicuous as possible. He achieves this by suturing each layer of skin, ensuring less scarring.

A tummy tuck is often performed in combination with other treatments such as sucking up or cutting away excess fat. The surgeon will look at the possibilities you are interested in and will advise you on which combination would deliver the best result.

A mini tummy tuck or a total tummy tuck can give you that tighter and flatter tummy.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

The surgery itself takes 2,5 hours. If other treatments are being done at the same time, the surgery may take longer. There are several possibilities. Subcutaneous fat and excess skin is removed through an incision that runs across your body, if possible under your bikini line. Sometimes the navel has to be repositioned (fleur-de-lis correction), which means a scar around the navel. In most cases, this scar is almost invisible after a year. The surgery is performed under general an aesthesia. In most cases, you will have to spend a night in the hospital.

An abdominoplasty can be performed in different ways depending on the amount of excess fat and skin. At Essential Aesthetics you can go for a mini abdominoplasty, a total abdominoplasty, a Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty can also be part of an Mommy makeover.

The result of a tummy tuck

The difference is already clearly visible straight after the surgery. The final result is attained 3 to 6 months later once the body is fully recovered. If there are no drastic changes such as pregnancy or strong fluctuations in weight, the result is usually permanent. Discuss your expectations with the surgeon to see what the results will be and avoid disappointments. The best results are achieved when you are at your target weight. A tummy tuck is not a means to lose weight, it may sometimes be necessary to lose weight first, before the surgery.

Recovery after tummy tuck

Depending on how extensive the surgery is, it may be necessary to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days. Sometimes a drain is placed to remove excess fluid. Feedback from our patients is that the pain is not bad. The area is sensitive after the surgery and you will probably experience some pulling pain which can be relieved with painkillers. Avoid (in as far as possible) coughing and sneezing, as this adds pressure to the zones which were operated on, which will increase the pain. For best results it is important that you wear a supportive corset for 8 weeks, 24 hours a day. This will support the operated area, prevent excessive swelling and speed up your recovery. After 8 weeks you will no longer need it. The treated area will be red and swollen after the surgery and there is often bruising. Most people can return to normal work after 2 weeks, check with your surgeon. It will take 6 weeks before you can resume any heavy, demanding work.

Safety through precautionary measures

You will receive, well before your surgery, a document with patient information, detailing general national advice. The surgeon will also give you personalized advice based on the scale of the tummy tuck and your general health status. Below is a short summary of the general advice. It is important to take it into account for the best result.

Before the surgery:
  • Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery
  • If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consult your surgeon, the same applies to Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac and others.
  • Do not use blood thinning medication before surgery.
  • Take a laxative the night before the surgery
  • Do not forget to arrange transportation home, even if you are staying the night. Driving yourself after the surgery is not allowed.
  • Arrange for someone to help you in your home for the first few days.

The day of the surgery:
  • Take a shower or a bath. After the surgery you are not allowed to shower for up to 72 hours.
  • Do not use body lotion or cream
  • Wear easy and loose-fitting clothes
  • Don’t forget to take your compression set and abdominal band to the O.R.
  • Do not wear jewellery, watches or piercings
  • Do not eat or drink anything in the 8 hours before the surgery.
  • Make sure you are rested and on time
After the surgery:
  • Make sure you’re not home alone for the first few days.
  • Preferably rest on your back.
  • Keep the blood circulation active by walking around every hour. This promotes wound healing.
  • You can only shower three weeks after the tummy tuck, ask the surgeon or care team for advice.
  • During the first three weeks after the tummy tuck, make sure that you do not push, lift or bend.
  • Work is possible after about a week and a half, but only if it involves moderate to light physical exertion.
  • Resuming sports is generally possible on average six weeks after the surgery, in consultation with the surgeon.
  • At first you can not drive yourself (car, motorbike etc.)

Risks and complications

Like all surgeries, abdominoplasty involves risks and possible complications. The risks and complications include:

  • Bleeding (hematoma) There is sometimes bleeding after surgery from the tissue in the wound cavity. Should this occur, your body could feel swollen and painful. It may be necessary to drain it by performing an additional procedure which would require a return to the hospital or clinic.
  • InfectionIt is important to recognize that a surgical incision in the body, contributes to the risk of introducing bacteria from the patient’s own skin. Such an infection can be accompanied by fatigue, weakness, fever and muscle pain. Taking antibiotics during your surgery reduces this risk to a minimum. It is very rare for a patient to need re-hospitalization. If you are experiencing symptoms of infection, contact your medical advisor or the telephone number for outside office hours.
  • Wound healing. How the wound heals varies from one person to the other and even from one body part to the other and is a gradual process. Smoking in the period before and after the surgery can seriously impede the healing process.
  • Location and variability of scar. All surgeries leave a permanent scar and patients need to be aware that the speed at which their scars heal and fade varies by individual. Sometimes a scar does not heal in the normal way, this is known as hypertrophic scarring. Scars can be red or coloured, thick, painful and it can take several years for them to heal. Although this is an unusual problem, it cannot be avoided or diagnosed in advance.

Different abdominoplasties

Each body is different, each tummy is different, hence a large variety in amount of fat and excess skin. That is why there are different abdominoplasties, depending on your body and amount of excess skin and fat. During the free consultation, our surgeon will look at the best treatment for your body. The price depends on the size of the surgery and the treatments that are carried out. The surgeon will be happy to give you an estimate of the costs during the free consultation.

Mini abdominal wall correction

  • The incision is smaller with a mini tummy tuck than with a total tummy tuck. The incision is made at the pubic mound and usually falls under the underwear. You can have a mini tummy tuck if you only suffer from excess skin. Often the tummy wall is still intact and the tummy is only flabby just above the pubic mound. The mini tummy tuck is also performed under general anesthesia and the surgery takes around 2 hours. The plastic surgeon makes an incision over the pubic mound and loosens skin and fat up to the rib arch. The navel is not repositioned. The excess skin and fat are cut away. If the abdominal muscles are also stretched, the surgeon pulls them towards each other and attaches them to each other.

Total tummy tuck

  • In total abdominoplasty, incisions are made at the pubic mound and around the navel. This treatment is suitable for people who have excess skin and a stretched muscle layer. The abdomen is often flabby from the ribcage.More time is needed for a total tummy tuck, on average 3 to 4 hours. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision above the pubic mound and loosens skin and fat up to the rib arch. The stretched muscles are brought together and sutured together. These sutures allow the muscles to grow back together again. The surgeon then removes the excess fat and skin and the result is achieved. It is often necessary during this surgery that the navel be moved as a lot of tissue is often cut away.

Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck

  • In a Fleur-de-lis correction, the surgeon makes three incisions: at the pubic mound (horizontal), from the pubic mound to the rib arch (vertical) and around the navel. The vertical scar and the scar around the navel remain visible. The scar at the pubic mound falls below the bikini line. This abdominoplasty is suitable for people who have a lot of excess skin and fat. This surgery is longer than a total abdominoplasty and takes an average of 3 to 5 hours.

The personal consultation

  • The first step towards a flatter abdomen, is a personal consultation with our plastic surgeon. You don’t have to decide right away, but you can if you wish. The surgeon listens to your wishes and expectations and then examines the possibilities with you. Every body is different, which is why the surgeon has to see your abdomen to give you the best advice. Keep this in mind and wear easy to remove clothes to your consultation. If you have pictures of what you are looking to achieve, take them with you and show them to the surgeon, so he can better assess whether your expectations are realistic. The surgeon will ask you about your health, but also about your medical history. Share as much as possible, as all these details can be important for your own safety and for achieving the best result. The surgeon will honestly tell you if he thinks it is wise to perform the desired procedure and will go through it with you.
If a tummy tuck is not wise, he will show you other solutions. Take this opportunity to ask about other treatments or wishes you have. Our surgeons can give you all the important information on all our treatments.Feel free to do some follow-up and research of your own on the internet.Once you have decided which treatments or procedure you want, the surgeon or a care team member will give you the price of the treatment based on the doctor’s advice.
