Sometimes, when we try, psysical training does not bring us the results we had hoped for. Many women suffer from a stacking of fat around the hips, thighs, abdomen and upper arms. This is particularly true after pregnancy due to the influence of hormones. Liposuction may then be an option.

During the surgery, incisions are made in inconspicuous places on your abdomen where a fluid is injected which causes the fat to loosen from the skin. The doctor then sucks the fat away, using a small hollow needle. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the result, he sutures the small incisions.

Many men and women wish for a tighter or flatter stomach because indeed the belly is a problem zone. Skin ageing, weight loss, but also pregnancies can cause the stomach skin to start hanging, no matter how many ab exercises you do. During a tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon makes an incision at the navel. The doctor makes a second incision just above the pubic area and just below the bikini line from side to side. Then the abdominal muscles are stitched together. The loosened skin pulls the surgeon down to the incision. The plastic surgeon carefully closes the wound after removing the excess tissue.

A tummy tuck is often performed in combination with other treatments such as sucking up or cutting away excess fat. The surgeon will look at the possibilities you are interested in and will advise you on which combination would deliver the best result.

A mini tummy tuck or a total tummy tuck can give you that tighter and flatter tummy.

Depending on how extensive the surgery is, it may be necessary to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days. Sometimes a drain is placed to drain excess fluid. Our patients often comment that the pain is not that bad. The area is sensitive after the surgery and you will probably experience some pain which can be relieved with analgesic medication. Avoid (in as far as possible) coughing and sneezing, because the added pressure on the zones which were operated on will increase the pain.

For best results it is important that you wear a supportive corset for 4 weeks, 24 hours a day. This will support the operated area, prevent excessive swelling and speed up your recovery. After 4 weeks you will only need the corset during the day and will no longer need it at all after 8 weeks. The treated area will be red and swollen immediately after the surgery and there is often bruising. Most people can return to normal work after 2 weeks, check with your surgeon. It will take 6 weeks before you can resume any heavy, demanding work.

The final result is attained 3 to 6 months later once the body is fully recovered. If there are no drastic changes such as pregnancy or strong fluctuations in weight, the result is usually permanent. Discuss your expectations with the surgeon to see what the results will be and avoid disappointments. The best results are achieved when you are at your target weight. A tummy tuck is not a means to lose weight, it may sometimes be necessary to lose weight first, before the surgery.

You will receive, well before your surgery, a document with patient information, detailing general national advice. The surgeon will also give you personalized advice based on the scale of the tummy tuck and your general health status. Below is a short summary of the general advice. It is important to take it into account for the best result.

Before the surgery:

• Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery
• Start taking Arnica drops two weeks in advance to reduce bruising and swelling.
• If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consult your surgeon, the same applies to Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac and others.
• Do not use blood thinning medication before surgery.
• Do not forget to arrange transportation home, even if you are staying the night. Driving yourself after the surgery is not allowed.
• Arrange for someone to help you in your home for the first few days.

The day of the surgery:

• Take a shower or a bath, after the surgery you are not allowed to shower for up to 72 hours.
• Do not use body lotion or cream
• Wear easy and loose-fitting clothes
• Don’t forget to take your corset to the O.R.
• Do not wear jewellery, watches or piercings
• Do not eat or drink anything in the 8 hours before the surgery.
• Make sure you are rested and on time

After the surgery:

• Make sure you’re not home alone for the first few days.
• Preferably rest on your back.
• Keep the blood circulation active by walking around every hour. This promotes wound healing.
• Do not shower until 72 hours after the tummy tuck, ask the surgeon or the care team for advice.
• During the first three weeks after the tummy tuck, make sure that you do not push, lift or bend.
• Try to avoid sneezing, coughing and laughing.
• Work is possible after about a week and a half, but only if it involves moderate to light physical exertion.
• Resuming sports is generally possible on average six weeks after the surgery, in consultation with the surgeon.
• Do not drive in the first period (car, motorcycle, etc.).

There are risks and complications associated with every surgery. A tummy tuck is a major surgery, which means there is a greater risk of complications than with smaller surgeries. Think carefully in advance about the pros and cons and read up on the risks and possible complications:
