Rhinoplasty (Nose correction)

Our nose is pretty significant in determining how
happy we are with our face.

A crooked, oversized or upturned nose can disturb the balance in our face. A nose correction is also called rhinoplasty or nasal plastic. There are many surgical corrections possible: a correction of the bone or cartilaginous nasal skeleton, a reconstruction or a smaller surgery. Straightening the nose is also possible by using fillers.

Straightening a crooked (not straight) nose (nasal septum correction)

To correct a crooked nose, the surgeon loosens the septum (partition) and straightens it. Excess cartilage is then removed.

Straightening a hooked nose

Correcting a hooked nose, or unproportionate nose is a more complicated procedure. The nose may need to be broken and cartilage from other parts of the body (rib, ears) used for best results.

Nose reduction

This can be done in two ways: a closed technique with an incision on the inside of the nose in the nasal mucosa, or an open technique with an incision in the skin bridge between the nostrils. Once the incision technique is chosen, the surgeon will adjust the nasal skeleton according to your wishes. The skin is then replaced and the incisions sutured. Tampons will be placed in the nostrils and a splint to maintain the new shape.

Recovery after rhinoplasty

This will depend on the rhinoplasty chosen. A snub nose rhinoplasty is less painful than an extensive rhinoplasty. The nose will be sensitive after rhinoplasty, but the pain is generally much less than with other corrections.
The larger the correction, the higher the risk of pain. You will receive pain killers. Most patients suffer from a painful tugging sensation in their face. Most patients also suffer from headaches in the first week. Swelling and bruising worsen in the first three days after surgery and then slowly diminish. Bruising can go as far as the eyes. Keep in mind that you will temporarily lose the sense of smell. You will recover it after a few days. Two to three check- ups are necessary depending on the procedure and your recovery.

Safety through precautionary measures

Our care team will not only help you in advance with your preparations and during your intake interview with the surgeon, but will also guide you after the surgery, so that you know what to expect and heal as well and as quickly as possible.

You will get the best results by taking into account the following general advice applicable to rhinoplasties requiring surgery:
Before the surgery

  • Stop smoking four weeks before the surgery
  • Start taking Arnica drops two weeks in advance to reduce bruising and swelling.
  • If you are taking medication such as Marcoumar, Sintrom/Sintrommitis or Asprocardio, consult your surgeon, the same applies to Aspirin or painkillers with aspirin such as Advil, Diclofenac and others.
  • Do not use blood thinning medication before surgery.
  • Don’t forget to arrange transportation home. Driving yourself after the surgery is not allowed.
  • Arrange for someone to help you in your home for the first few days.

The day of the surgery

  • Have a shower, after the surgery you may not shower for 24 hours
  • Do not use make-up or facial cream
  • Do not wear jewellery or watches
  • Bring a cap to protect the wounds from direct sunlight after the surgery.

After surgery

  • Make sure you are not alone at home.
  • Consultation with the doctor or cooling is necessary to reduce swelling
  • Rest preferably lying on your back so the swelling goes down faster.
  • Keep the blood circulation active by taking walking about every hour. This promotes the healing of the wound.
  • Shower. In general, this is possible 24 hours after the rhinoplasty, but make sure that the area of the surgery remains as dry as possible.
  • Working. This is usually possible after a week if the work involves moderate to light physical exertion, but consult with your doctor first.
  • After a week you can move normally again and gently take a walk and ride a bicycle.
  • Exercising is allowed six weeks after surgery.
  • Do not drive the first period yourself. You can ask your insurer whether or not you are insured after the surgery as a driver.
  • Avoid direct sunshine on your wounds for the first months. So no sun or sunbed. Don’t forget to cover them properly when you’re planning on enjoying the sun with the rest of your body.

Risks and complications

There are risks associated with every surgery. You will receive all the information about it from our plastic surgeon. It is important for your own well-being and health not to withhold medical information and to follow the advice of the plastic surgeon. If you have any complaints, don’t hesitate and call or app the care team to see if an extra check-up by the surgeon is necessary.

Complications that can occur:

  • Haematoma formation (an accumulation of blood under the skin that requires removal)
  • Negative reaction to the anesthetic
  • Infection
  • Change of feeling
  • Permanent visible scars
  • Damage to underlying structures
  • Airway disorder (difficulty breathing through the nose) due to swelling of the nose
  • Damage to the nasal septum
  • Reduced air circulation through the nose, e.g. due to obstruction.
